At the Bouregreg Med-O-Med Gardening School, autumn is not just a season: it is a state of mind. A time when the earth, calmed after the summer, invites everyone to slow down, breathe and reconnect with life. This period, marked by the harvesting of pumpkins, carrots, beetroots and fennel, becomes a true exercise in collective well-being, in which nature teaches humans the art of transformation.
Well-being, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’.
Here, caring for the earth also means caring for oneself and others.
This definition is fully reflected in the values and practices of the Med-O-Med School. Here, caring for the earth also means caring for oneself and others.
Because wellbeing comes from natural things, such as the simple acts of gardening: planting, watering, harvesting or even pruning.
These gestures become forms of active meditation.
Just like cooking, which has the art of creating conviviality, but even more so when seasonal vegetables become a comforting moment of sharing around steaming pots. Then chickpea tagines, aromatic soups from the garden or a rfissa that brings people together and soothes the soul are prepared.
Workshops, market and café-restaurant
On Sundays, the school market selling local products certified as organic by the BioShoul cooperative extends this philosophy of global well-being. While adults discover the market’s products and the pleasant terrace of the Azafrán café-restaurant, children take part in educational and sensory workshops: they learn how to plant in pots, handle soil, water gently and observe the first changes that nature offers them.
These short-term gestures awaken their curiosity, patience and connection to life, and in the long term they awaken their ecological awareness and relationship with nature, while cultivating their social development.
These gestures become forms of active meditation.
In this autumnal harmony, where colours and scents intermingle, everyone finds their place: young people in training, families, visitors, plants and even the wind. Everyone participates in the same invisible work: that of nature, that of recovering gratitude for the natural cycle, without losing the familiar aspect.
Collective inspiration
At Med-O-Med, wellbeing is not a concept, it is a collective breath/inspiration. It is the warmth of a shared soup, the smile of a curious child, a rest for the elderly.
After all, as long as we have flowers to contemplate together, there will be wellbeing to cultivate.
