DEPARTMENT AND PROGRAMMES | • Climate & Water Unit: The Climate and Water Unit was established by LARI in 2011 at Fanar Station. The main objective is to enhance sustainable use of water resources in Lebanon while considering the challenges of climate variability and change, water scarcity and pollution. Contact: Head of the Unit, Marie Therese Abi Saab – PhD/ Irrigation and Agronomy (mtabisaab@lari.gov.lb) • Food Microbiology Department • Antibiotics & Pesticides Residues Department • Mycology Laboratory: was established in 2011. Its main objective is to carry out research studies on the diagnosis, epidemiology and management of fungal diseases of the major crops. Most projects focus on soil borne pathogens i.e. Verticillium, Fusarium, etc. and the genetic characterization of populations of pathogens, such as Alternaria spp., Botrytis cinerea, among others. Contact: Wassim Habib – Researcher (whabib@lari.gov.lb) • Agro-Economics & Rural Development Department: Socio-economic studies through joint projects with international institutions / Feasibility study of Plants development, and research projects in the field of agricultural and rural development / Studies in the field of gender / Cooperation with other departments in the field of agricultural and development statistics / Implementation of training courses in the field of agriculture and rural development. Contact: Eng.Hanaa Chehabeddine (chehabeddine.h@gmail.com) • Entomology Unit – Plant Protection: is specialized in pest surveillance and management in agriculture and forest sectors and has a big experience in management of Fruit Flies on olive and fruit trees, Lobesia botrana on grape, Tuta absoluta on tomato, Gypsy Moth on oak trees and Pine Shoot Beetle on pine trees. In addition, the unit focuses on conservation of Natural Resource such as beneficial insects, insect-plant association. The unit provides farmers technical supports and extensions through seminars, conferences, exhibitions, booklets, Media and LARI-LEB forecast application in order to improve food production within the framework of sustainable agriculture. Zinette Moussa – Head of department – is active members in TEAM Steering committee of fruit fly in Europe, Asia and the Middle East and she is the national expert for the identification of fruit flies in Lebanon(zmousa@lari.gov.lb) • Soil, Fertiliser, and Plant Department • Genetic Biodiversity Department: Optimal conditions for Cannabis sativa in Lebanon / Phytoremediation effect of cannabis sativa in polluted soil in Lebanon / Genotypic effects on the chemotype of Cannabis sativa in Lebanon. Rhend Hajj Sleiman, Head of department (rhendsleiman@lari.gov.lb) • Bacterial Plant Diseases & Parasitology Departments: the bacterial dept. covers the identification of major bacterial plant diseases (Erwinia, Agrobacterium, Xanthomonas, Xylophilus, Xylella, Pseudomonas) by culture, biochemical profiling and molecular techniques. The parasitology dept. covers the analysis and research for protozoan, helminthes and ectoparasites in urine, stool, blood, sputum, soil/compost, sludge, water and many other samples based on CDC, ISO and WHO requirements. Contact: Dr. Ziad RIZK, Head of Bacterial Plant Diseases and Parasitology Departments (zrizk@lari.gov.lb) • Environmental Microbiology Department: Routine testing of pathogenic and beneficial microbiome collected from soil and any source of fermented organic matter (aerobic and anaerobic) / Fulfill all types of studies related to the identification of microorganisms form different microbiomes (environment, grapes, cellars, plant, soil…), their use in processing and their impact on the quality of end products.
