“…A number of exotic crops had to be grown under irrigation, acclimatising them for the first time or re-establishing them. This was the case with sugar cane (qasab al-sukkar), which had been introduced early on and had spread from Valencia to the mouth of the Guadalquivir; but towards the end of the Islamic presence in Spain (with the Moriscos), it was only cultivated in the districts of Motril, Vélez-Málaga and Almuñécar, alternating with bananas. In these areas, a suitable habitat was gradually created and still exists today”.
