The Islamic Awqaf for the fauna

In Islam, there are Awqaf (Waqfs) even for the benefit of animals. This picture shows an ancient Islamic tradition that lives on in Turkey.

When the blanket of snow covers everything, people go to the mountain peaks and spread seeds and feed to prevent that birds die from starvation during the snowfall season…

This action began with the Umayyad caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (8th century) and is told in several history books:

“Go and distribute seeds on mountains tops, do not let birds to die of hunger in a Muslim country”.
